Is a career as a Paralegal right for you? - Guide to Distance Learning

When your career hits a glass ceiling, a dead end, or otherwise stalls out, going back to school to learn a new trade of set of skills is a smart plan of action. With distance learning and on-line degree programs, more people have more options about their education, and thus have more options for their future.

he job market for paralegal services is supposed to increase, photo by expertinfantry

In a recent article on Yahoo! Education, one of the careers spotlighted as being desirable as a second career was that of a paralegal. According to the Department of Labor, demand for paralegals is expected to grow substantially in the next few years as employers try to increase efficiency and reduce their overhead and costs of legal services.

What is a paralegal? Well, the definition varies slightly from country to country. Basically, a paralegal is anyone who assists a qualified lawyer in the legal profession. That?s a pretty vague definition, admittedly. In Canada, paralegals are licensed and monitored by the government, and the profession is regulated. In America, the duties of a paralegal can be different from state to state, city to city, or law firm to law firm. But in essence, anyone working under the direct supervision of a lawyer is considered a paralegal.

To work as a paralegal, potential employees need to have either an AA (associates of arts, a two year degree) in paralegal studies, or a certificate in paralegal studies. A bachelor?s degree in the field is a plus, but not mandatory to get your foot in the door.

When going to school for paralegal studies, some of the courses required will include (but not be limited to) Probate and Family Law, Real Estate, Litigation, Legal Research, Corporate Law, Legal Writing and Reasoning, Technology, Ethics, Legal Procedures, Torts. A paralegal isn?t a lawyer, but the more they know about the law, the more valuable they are as an asset to a law firm. These courses are usually designed to give the student a broad general understanding of the law, its concepts, and procedures and processes.

However, since different lawyers in different fields of law all hire paralegals, getting specific knowledge in real estate law, estate planning, government law, or criminal trials (just to name a few examples) can be beneficial and help the student find a job in the future. Paralegal is such a general term, that there is a lot of room under the umbrella for different types of paralegal work.

Sound interesting? Ok, now its your turn to do some research and find out more details about the distance learning programs available, to see which one is right for you ? or to see if the profession in general is a good fit.

Kaplan University offers two degrees, an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies, and a Postbaccalaureate Pathway to Paralegal Studies Certificate.

Everest University Online offers an Associate in Science Paralegal.

Boston University Online offers a Paralegal Certificate.

Virginia College has two degrees available through their online program, an Associate of Science Paralegal Studies, and a Bachelor of Science Paralegal Studies.

Geminid meteor shower reigns in the night sky (+video)

Geminid meteor shower: Last night's annual meteor shower was a crowd pleaser. The Gemind meteor shower comes from debris shed by a 3-mile-wide? asteroid called 3200 Phaethon.

By Mike Wall,?Space.com / December 14, 2012

The annual Geminid meteor shower peaked overnight last night (Dec. 13), dazzling skywatchers around the world with a bounty of brilliant shooting stars.

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

Avail Affordable Communication With Help Of Used Telephone ...

With prices of every essential commodity skyrocketing, the availability of used telephone systems is a refreshing change. For, by opting for these telephone systems people are able to find an alternative and affordable communication mechanism.
The sudden spurt in the phenomenon to buy used phone equipment can be seen in the manner telephone is viewed these days. Gone are days when a person could conduct himself/herself well without even feeling the need of a telephone system. However, in modern times having a telephone is no longer looked as an item of luxury but as a necessity. The growing reliance of many commercial establishments and workplaces on telephone equipment has raised the demand level of telephone equipment.
While this is a hard reality, it is equally true that not many organizations are able to bear the burden of such expensive equipment. This is where the refurbished or used versions come as a great relief to them. Undoubtedly they are not brand new phones. However, when it comes to their functionalities and performance, they can give the brand new models some run for money. Smooth and uninterrupted communication flow derived from them is testimony to this fact.
When it comes to suitability of users for such used items, it is the start-up companies or a new company that can benefit the most from it. For, with the prevailing inflationary measures looming large in the economy, they find it very difficult to install high-end new phones. This is where the inexpensive nature of these phones comes to their help.
Of late, many branded companies have mushroomed that specialize in such second hand phones. They keep wide varieties of phones starting from wired to non-wired models. Their ability to give good service comes from the fact that they have been put to use before and tested. Wherever problems arise due to some parts, they can easily be replaced.

Choose Your Battles: Fighting Less in Relationships | Tiny Buddha

by Lori Deschene

?A more peaceful way to live is to decide consciously which battles are worth fighting and which are better left alone.? ~Richard Carlson

Have you ever been in a relationship that seemed more like work than fun? Where every day you seemed to have a new issue to discuss?

Maybe it had to do with little miscommunications, or an ongoing dispute, or a difference of opinion that regularly complicated your daily interactions.

Whatever it was, you always found yourself wanting to hash things out to get everything back to normal.

Except that was normal?conflict, friction, and disagreement; you just held out hope that maybe it could change.

I had a friendship like this a few years back. We really got each other, and that?s a big part of why we grew close.

But we also got on each other?s nerves on a near-daily basis. In retrospect, I see that our two personalities came together to create something toxic.

It was like the perfect storm of insecurities and and egos colliding; our collapse may have always been a matter of time. But I also realize we both created drama where it didn?t need to be.

We made everything an issue.

I?ve since learned that healthy relationships require a little discernment as to what?s a problem and what?s just small stuff; and that sometimes, the instinct to sweat all that small stuff is a sign of a bigger problem?that the relationship may just not be right.

Not sure why so much annoys you? There could be any number of reasons. One of these problems may seem familiar, and one of these solutions may help.

Problem 1:

You?re harboring resentment or anger, but instead of expressing what you really feel, you pick at the little things.

The Solution:

Take some time to get to the root of your feelings. What?s really bothering you? Sure, those unwashed dishes and slow email responses are annoying, but what?s the bigger issue?

Do you fear the person doesn?t respect you? Do their actions seem to confirm your fear that you are somehow unworthy? Are you holding a grudge over something big that happened two years ago?

Ask yourself if there?s a bigger conversation you need to have?something you need to say that you didn?t, or perhaps something you need to work out in your own head.

Once you release the weight of the big underlying issue, you won?t feel so angered by the little surface-level annoyances that occur in every relationship.

Problem 2:

You?re dealing with stresses unrelated to the relationship, so you vent that stress where you easily can: on the people closest to you.

The Solution:

Ask yourself: What?s causing me to feel irritable so frequently?in what ways am I overextended and unbalanced, and what do I need to do to change that?

It might mean allowing yourself more space to meet your own needs (instead of always being there for other people). It might mean taking care of yourself a little better, mentally, emotionally, and physically, so you don?t feel drained so frequently.

Or it might have to do with the amount of time you work. Perhaps you?re pushing yourself too hard, pressuring yourself to do and be more, which makes you feel edgy and anxious.

Once you address your own issues, you won?t create as many in your relationship; in this way prioritizing your needs helps both you and your connections.

Problem 3:

You have an idealized vision of what love and friendship should look like, so you fight whenever something happens that doesn?t fit within that vision.

The Solution:

Ask yourself if you could meet your own standards for love.

The little things that are bothering you?have you done those same things before? How would you like someone to respond to you when you make those little mistakes?

This isn?t the same as allowing someone to treat your poorly. This is recognizing when those little things really aren?t signs of that, but rather an indication that someone else is human and doing the best they can.

If you flip it around, you can focus more on giving the kind of love you want to receive than bemoaning the love you think you?re not getting?which, incidentally, may help you get more of that back.

Problem 4:

All of your relationships involve constant drama. This is the only way you know how to be in a relationship of any kind, and you may even look for problems when there?s nothing to fight about.

The Solution:

If you grew up around chaos, you may actually feel more secure when you?re yelling, getting yelled at, and making up. It might even feel uncomfortable to have a day without any friction.

Challenge yourself to sit with your feelings so you can learn to minimize your internal drama. When you work on releasing your anxious energy, you?ll be able to explore what relationships can look and feel like with out it.

You may only experience this for short lengths of time at first, but if you work at it every day, that time will increase. You?ll slowly start feeling more secure in enjoying the other person?s company, and less of a need to model this relationship after others that hinged around fighting.

If the issue is more about liking the excitement that drama creates, focus on creating excitement in other ways: do something new and adventurous (on your own or together). Make yourself feel alive without needing to fight someone to feel it.

Problem 5:

You?re in a relationship that?s not good for you, but you feel too scared to leave, so instead you stay and express irritation over all kinds of minor annoyances.

The Solution:

This is the hard one?where it?s not about choosing your battles, but about recognizing it?s time to stop fighting the truth.

It won?t be easy, but you need to be honest with yourself about whether or not you really want to be in this relationship. It might help to ask yourself: If I knew I could find something more fulfilling by walking away, would I? Do I feel like this relationship (or friendship) leads to more pain than joy?

A lot of people won?t even ask themselves these questions, because once you know you?re compromising yourself to stay with a sure/safe thing, you only have two options: continue doing that and feel even worse about yourself, or find the strength to walk away and open yourself up to something better.

This is by no means easy to do, but if you can be honest with yourself, then you can move to the second part: Tell someone else.

Tell a friend that you need help and support to find the courage to walk away. You might not have the strength or trust that this is the right decision, but someone else who loves you will help you get through the scary part, if you?re willing to let them.

?

These are some of the top reasons we turn relationships into war zones. There will be times when the other people in our lives do these same things. Hopefully we can inspire them to be more self-aware by modeling what that looks like.

Of course, there may be times when we have a legitimate issue that we need to address?when it truly isn?t ?small stuff.? If we?ve chosen our battles wisely it will be much easier to work through these tough times together.

U.S. Troops' Service No Laughing Matter, Comedian Says

U.S. Troops' Service No Laughing Matter, Comedian Says

By Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyrone C. Marshall Jr.
American Forces Press Service

BAGRAM, Afghanistan, Dec. 19, 2012 ? Each year around the holidays as it has for more than seven decades the USO provides overseas-deployed American troops with entertainment provided by talented fellow Americans.

This year, Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, joined by Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Bryan B. Battaglia, his senior enlisted advisor, led another extraordinary group overseas to entertain the troops.

Iliza Shlesinger, host of the CBS syndicated television reality-based comedy dating competition show, ?Excused,? and the youngest contestant to ever win NBC's ?Last Comic Standing,? was among the group of entertainers and other celebrities in this year?s USO holiday tour.

?You never know what to expect,? Shlesinger said. ?All I knew was that we were coming over to entertain the troops.?

Shlesinger said she was honored to be a part of this year?s USO tour.

?Everybody has been so nice, and so welcoming. ?And the bases -- it's just been such an honor to tour them,? she said. ?I would to go hell and back to entertain our troops.

?They do so much for us,? Shlesinger continued. ?I don't care if it's on the moon, Mars or Afghanistan. I'll happily come here anytime to make the men and women of our military happy.?

The comedian described some of the unique opportunities she had, such as getting inside the cockpit of a military aircraft.

?On the flight over here from Kyrgyzstan, I got to sit in the front of the plane as we landed in Afghanistan,? she said.

And, Shlesinger said, everyone she met made her feel welcome.

?They've just been so gracious and cool about letting us experience everything, and seeing everything,? she said. ?And just to see the [base] that you guys have set up here. Everybody is so nice, you forget that we're at war. The experience, in its entirety, has been amazing.?

Among the other celebrities joining Shlesinger on the tour were Washington Nationals Major League Baseball players Ross Detwiler and Craig Stammen, Matt Hendricks of the Washington Capitals and country music singer Kellie Pickler.

USO President Sloan D. Gibson, and Shane Hudella, of ?Defending the Blue Line,? an organization that donates hockey equipment to military families, accompanied the USO tour group.

Shlesinger called it ?humbling? that service members are willing to risk their lives to protect the nation so she can tell jokes on stage.

?I mean, it's Christmas time, and everyone wants to be with their families,? Shlesinger said. ?Especially when I see kids ? that are like 17-years old that fly fighter planes, and give up their lives, in [some] cases. I think the [most] important thing to remember is you guys are not forgotten.?

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Features: Multi Window Update For T-Mobile Launches Tomorrow, Where To Download VIDEO

Samsung?s Galaxy Note 2 for T-Mobile will be getting an update that brings the widely discussed multi-window feature to its mobile operating system. Beginning on Dec. 19, Note 2 users on T-Mobile?s network will be able to open more than one application at a time in separate windows on the home screen.

In addition to this added multitasking feature, the update will bring a number of fixes and tweaks. For example, Gmail updates will make it easier for users to swipe through their messages, and improvements to Microsoft?s Exchange app will fix bugs with calendar events. Specifically, users have reported that their calendar events were not showing up on the email client?s mobile app.

Beginning on Wednesday, Galaxy Note 2 owners operating on T-Mobile?s network will be able to update their devices via Samsung?s Kies software or over-the-air (OTA).?To check for over-the-air updates, simply press the Menu button from the Home screen. From there, navigate to Settings > About phone > Software Update. If the software has already been pushed to your phone, you will be prompted to download the update.

When downloading the update OTA, your device should notify you when the software is ready. A download link will be in this notification message, and after pressing it simply select the Install Now button. After this, your phone will automatically restart. T-Mobile?s support page offers further instructions for manually installing KIES and checking for updates.

The 5.5-inch handset?s operating system will remain as Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, but the baseband will be updated to version T889UVALK8. The baseband is a chipset in a mobile device that controls cellular hardware and communications with cell towers. Therefore, an update to the baseband is likely to improve reception in addition to bringing these app improvements.

The Galaxy Note 2?s massive 5.5-inch display panel is sure to make good use of this multi-window feature. This multitasking capability combined with the S Pen?s Air Play features, which allow users to hover over a button without touch the device to bring up a caption, simulate a PC-style experience. With this Air Play ability, the S Pen emulates a computer mouse.

Multi-window support could make it easier for users to perform functions such as streaming videos and send emails at the same time. As a Samsung representative demonstrated at a New York City Verizon retail store at launch, streaming videos will automatically shrink and play in one corner of the screen so that users will not have to pause clips while sending messages.

As Android news blog Phandroid points out, multi-windows support may only work for select apps. This means that there is a possibility that this feature will be limited to most Samsung-created apps and some popular third party apps such as Facebook and Twitter. However, users won?t know for sure until the update rolls out tomorrow.

Galaxy Note 2 devices operating on Sprint?s network received this multi-window update in early November, and while Verizon was the last to offer Samsung?s ?phablet,? it was the only U.S. carrier to offer the feature upon launch.

Synthetic and biological nanoparticles combined to produce new metamaterials

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Scientists from Aalto University, Finland, have succeeded in organising virus particles, protein cages and nanoparticles into crystalline materials. These nanomaterials studied by the Finnish research group are important for applications in sensing, optics, electronics and drug delivery.

Layer structures, or superlattices, of crystalline nanoparticles have been extensively studied in recent years. The research develops hierarchically structured nanomaterials with tuneable optical, magnetic, electronic and catalytic properties.

Such biohybrid superlattices of nanoparticles and proteins would allow the best features of both particle types to be combined. They would comprise the versatility of synthetic nanoparticles and the highly controlled assembly properties of biomolecules, according to the authors.

The research group also discovered magnetic self-assemblies of ferritin protein cages and gold nanoparticles. These magnetic assemblies can modulate efficiently spin-spin relaxation times of surrounding protons in water by enhancing the spin dephasing and consequently provide contrast enhancement in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The gold nanoparticles and viruses adopt a special kind of crystal structure. It does not correspond to any known atomic or molecular crystal structure and it has previously not been observed with nano-sized particles.

Virus particles -- the old foes of humankind -- can do much more than infect living organisms. Evolution has rendered them with the capability of highly controlled self-assembly properties. Ultimately, by utilising their building blocks we can bring multiple functions to hybrid materials that consist of both living and synthetic matter, Kostiainen trusts.

Mount Everest Gigapixel Photo Shows World's Highest Mountain In Extreme Interactive Detail (PHOTO)

Picture this: Mount Everest, captured in astounding interactive digital detail. We're not talking megapixels, we're talking gigapixels -- as in two to three billion pixels. An image so detailed you can zoom in on individuals standing around at basecamp from miles away.

The folks at Glacier Works recently finished putting together such an image as part of their work to track climate change and its effects on the glaciers of Mount Everest.

"Our high-resolution gigapixel photography enables viewers to experience the glaciers as never before: up-close and with extreme precision," writes Glacier Works on the group's Facebook page. "Using our online tools, it is possible to soar thousands of feet above a glacier and view it in its entirety, or zoom down to the ground and explore pebbles embedded in the ice."

(Click through to see the photo here.)

The image is actually the product of more than 400 individual photos, each taken with a 300mm lens then stitched together, David Breashears, the photographer and team founder, explained to NPR.

Breashears sees changes in the glaciers on Mount Everest as a canary in the coalmine of the Himalayas, a sign of dangerous things to come if we don't take action. His team's work also includes comparing old and new photos taken from the same vantage point to illustrate climate change, an example of which can be seen below.

Thuraya and SoftBank Mobile to provide Japanese satellite network ...

    Louise Duffy | 19-12-2012

Mobile satellite services operator Thuraya Telecommunications and Japanese telco SoftBank Mobile have signed an agreement to provide Japanese business, enterprise and consumer subscribers across Thuraya?s satellite network with mobile satellite communication services.

Softbank Mobile has been approved by the Japanese regulator to provide Thuraya?s satellite network services in Japan. Starting in February 2013, Thuraya?s handsets and airtime services will be sold to customers from SoftBank Mobile?s distribution channels. As part of the agreement, the two companies will design a new version of Thuraya?s handset with special features, available exclusively for sale by SoftBank Mobile.

Thuraya?s services are available to SoftBank users who are outside of terrestrial networks, or in areas where those networks are unavailable or are vulnerable to natural disasters. Thuraya?s services aim to allow media, energy, government, and all other types of enterprises, as well as individual consumers to communicate at any time from anywhere in Japan and the maritime areas surrounding it.

"During the disruption caused to mobile network services when the Great East Japan Earthquake hit in 2011, satellite communication services played a significant role in restoring network transmission services and providing subscribers with preliminary communication services. By partnering with Thuraya, SoftBank Mobile aims to provide reliable and easily deployable emergency mobile telecommunication services during times of disaster recovery operations," said SoftBank Mobile's executive vice president, director & CTO, Junichi Miyakawa.

"With the partnership with a trusted satellite operator coupled with a superb mobile satellite products, SoftBank Mobile is well positioned to provide our subscribers with high quality and reliable mobile voice communications across Thuraya's broad geographic footprint both on land and at sea."

"Like SoftBank Mobile, Thuraya is committed to providing reliable connectivity to serve humanity. This groundbreaking alliance between our companies represents an exciting milestone for SoftBank's subscribers who can now benefit from comprehensive coverage of our satellite network," added Samer Halawi, chief executive officer for Thuraya.

"This agreement is another example of Thuraya's flexibility and product innovation which has met the specific requirements of SoftBank and its customers. Thuraya is looking forward to bringing the best of mobile satellite devices and industry expertise in support of critical communication services in our partnership with SoftBank Mobile."

Sally Roberts continues to oppose further treatment for her son Neon's cancer at High Court as doctor warns seven-year-old 'could die soon'

    • High Court rules Neon Roberts needs surgery on brain tumour
    • His mother tells court she does not consent to the operation

Refused: Sally Roberts, 37, pictured outside the High Court in London yesterday, told a judge that she did not want her son Neon, 7, to receive surgery on a brain tumour

The boy snatched by his mother to save him from the ordeal of cancer treatment will have brain surgery today against her wishes.

A judge ordered yesterday that seven-year-old Neon Roberts must be operated on ?as soon as possible?.

A doctor told the court that without treatment it was highly likely the child would die ?after a relatively short period of time?.

But Sally Roberts has refused to give her consent because she does not trust British doctors and fears her son will suffer long-term side effects from treatment.

Mrs Roberts, 37, wants to seek second opinions from abroad and argued it is her ?human right? to decide what is best for Neon.

But in the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Bodey said: ?We do not have the luxury of time. I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

Last night Neon was given his Christmas presents early before being taken to hospital.

He was diagnosed two months ago with a medulloblastoma tumour, which doctors believed they had removed in full during a nine-hour operation on October 25.

But Mrs Roberts refused to let her son receive radiotherapy following the first operation, and recent MRI scans picked up a growth of 1.5cm squared ? either regrowth or residual tumour.

Her estranged husband Ben, 34, wrote a statement to the judge saying he was in support of surgery and is said to be ?anxious? it is performed as soon as possible.

After yesterday?s verdict, Mrs Roberts, who triggered a national search when she went on the run with her son two weeks ago, said she understood why the judge made the ruling, but added: ?Should this be my decision as his mother? Of course it should be. It is a human rights issue.

?I?m not keeping this case going, spending taxpayers? money, for nothing. I believe in this. Death by doctor ? people need to understand how big a problem it is. I couldn?t forgive myself if I did nothing.?

The operation carries a risk of between 10 and 25 per cent that Neon will be left mute. But despite experts unanimously reporting that his cancer has returned and warning that he may have only two or three months to live without treatment, Mrs Roberts said she believed doctors were over-emphasising how ?sick? he is.

?Everyone is talking of me depriving him of treatment, saying my son is going to die. It is simply not true but everyone believes it,? she added.

?He?s running about, wanting to play. But the surgery will take it out of him. The operation will affect his movement, balance, his speech. It can sometimes cause the cancer to spread.?

She insisted that she was not fighting simply on mother?s intuition, saying: ?This is not something I just think. This is something I know. I have researched this.?

She said her estranged husband opposed her actions because he had not done enough research on the subject. Mrs Roberts, who wants Neon to be treated with alternative medicine such as oxygen therapy, insisted ?death by doctor? was a ?bigger problem than terrorism?.

She argued that the only evidence cited in court in favour of radiotherapy was a study on a small number of infants from the 1940s, and claimed to have found studies from abroad which prove radiotherapy is often unnecessary. A doctor in court said he was not familiar with the research.

Mrs Roberts dismissed her legal team minutes before court yesterday because she did not believe they had enough faith in her case. She has since hired renowned human rights lawyer Imran Khan, best known for representing the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence.

The mother-of-two, who is originally from New Zealand, had asked the court to postpone a decision on surgery until she could seek second opinions from Russia, Germany, China and the United States.

She had earlier consented to the operation but changed her mind on the morning of yesterday?s hearing, and said she believes the growth spotted on recent MRI scans could be scar tissue.

Doctors treating Neon, however, claim he has already been ?disadvantaged? by the delays in his treatment. Mr Justice Bodey said he had sympathy with Mrs Roberts, but added: ?Putting all those risks in the balance?.?.?.?in the unhappy position [Neon] now finds himself, I am quite satisfied that surgery is in his best interests.?

After spending today in hospital with Neon, Mrs Roberts will tomorrow return to the High Court to try to prevent her son being given radiotherapy in January.

900 AND COUNTING: Boeheim becomes 3rd coach in Division-I history to reach milestone win total with Syracuse?s win over Detroit

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim celebrates his 900th career win with his family, players and coaches. He's only the third coach in Division-I history to reach the milestone.

Here was Jim Boeheim, striding out of the tunnel, onto the court bearing his name for his 1,204th?game as Syracuse head coach: his 900th?win. At 68 years old, dressed for the occasion in his blue shirt and orange tie, the Carrier Dome crowd praised his every move with a magnificent roar.

Appearing a few steps behind Boeheim came Dave Bing, the Syracuse legend, former teammate of Boeheim and mayor of Detroit. As college roommates, the pair spent countless nights in their room, dreaming and discussing their career prospects.

On a historic, momentous evening, Bing?s presence was both heartwarming and nerve-wracking for the head coach who never envisioned this future as a lanky freshman walk-on in 1962.

?When I went into the locker room he was already sitting there,? Boeheim said. ?So that was the first time I?ve been nervous, in I couldn?t tell you. In a long time, anyway.?

As Syracuse leapt out to a 19-point halftime lead, those nerves subsided a little, but Detroit stormed back late, nearly spoiling a night of celebration. Michael Carter-Williams made 5-of-6 free throws in the last 30 seconds to preserve a 72-68 victory for the No. 3 Orange (10-0).

Syracuse?s 10th win of the season gave Boeheim his 900th all time, placing him alongside Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight as the only coaches in Division-I men?s basketball history to cross the 900-win threshold, beginning a celebration of the man who built Syracuse?s program into its current form.

The game, despite how tight it got late, was not the main event for the 17,902 in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse legends like Bing and Roosevelt Bouie did not just show up for a random nonconference game in December. This night was about Boeheim.

Bing spoke with Boeheim before the game, and they talked about their history and friendship. Bing traveled to Syracuse unbeknownst to Boeheim.

?This was his 900th win and there?s no way, regardless of what?s going on in Detroit, that I wouldn?t be here,? Bing said.

Fans were handed miniature, cardboard Boeheim heads on popsicle sticks with nine minutes remaining that read ?Coach Jim Boeheim 900 wins? on the back. Most waved them back and forth at the final buzzer.

Boeheim was presented with a commemorative plaque that held a Boeheim jersey with the No. 900, similar to the one he was presented a little more than three years ago after his 800th win, and was honored on the court alongside his family and team.

Then the montage played on the Carrier Dome screens, featuring images from throughout Boeheim?s 36 seasons as head coach. Legendary coaches Krzyzewski and Rick Pitino offered congratulations, along with media notables like Mike Tirico and Dick Vitale.

Boeheim coached and spoke as if the number did not mean much to him. It was just another game, another win. He coached with the same demeanor.

The same actions: Stern face, hands on his hips, tucked inside his jacket. The only difference was the special attendees and postgame celebration.

?Whether I?ve won 800 or 900 does not matter,? Boeheim said. ?Whether I?ve won 800 or 700, the reason I won 900 is I stayed longer than I ever thought I would have.?

Syracuse guard Brandon Triche grew up in nearby Jamesville. His uncle, Howard Triche, played for Boeheim. In watching the montage and reflecting on the moment, Triche said Boeheim means a lot to the community and many in the area look up to him.

Of all Boeheim?s accomplishments that displayed on the video screen, Triche picked one out as most memorable.

?The 2003 one, everybody going crazy, winning the national championship,? he said. ?What was going through my head was, ?Will I be able to get that chance, to hold up a national championship trophy???

After the game, Boeheim reiterated that 900 wins, while a large number, is not meaningful to him. It just means he has been coaching for a very long time. He deflected credit for any of his wins to his players and the Syracuse community all evening.

?I?ve had tremendous players for a long time and that?s how you win these things,? he said. ?That?s how you win games, and you coach a long time you?re going to win a lot of games. It?s as simple as that. If you?re in a good place and I?m in a good place, I?ve always felt I was.?

James Southerland, who led SU with 22 points Monday, watched the montage and celebration unfold next to assistant coach Adrian Autry. Southerland was a freshman when Boeheim won his 800th game, and asked his coach, ?Where were you?? Autry came back by telling Southerland he was there for Boeheim?s 350th.

From Bing, to Autry, to Southerland and the current Orange, Boeheim?s legend has lasted longer than either the coach or his college roommate imagined.

?There were so many nights when we were roommates that we just sat up and talked and dreamed and had visions,? Bing said, ?and I don?t think either of us ever thought that he was going to be the coach and win 900 games.

    ?But here we are.?

A New Orleans-based company, the TOD Group, on Monday said it is in discussion with unnamed national builders to construct up to 1,125 apartments, townhomes and condos, as well as 250,000 square feet of commercial space, on a 21.8-acre development just north of Denver.

Last week the Adams County Board of Commissioners gave unanimous approval to the Clear Creek Transit Village west of Federal Boulevard near West 50th Avenue, just north of Interstate 76 in Adams County. Its western boundary is near Lowell Boulevard.

It is being touted as a model for transit-oriented developments nationwide. Because of its location along Clear Creek and its proximity to Lake Sangreco and the Jim Baker Reservoir, it is being marketed as ?Wild Colorado Five Minutes from Downtown Denver.?

The TOD Group bought the property in 2009. The land is less than a quarter mile from the RTD Fastracks Gold Line, which will run from the Denver Union Station to Wheat Ridge.

?The Clear Creek Transit Village will offer the best of both worlds, with a combination of urban and natural amenities,? said John Renne, managing director of The TOD Group.? ?It will have a mix of restaurants, retailers, apartments and condos, emphasizing both walkability and access to public transit.?

The southern boundary of the project is along Clear Creek, providing access to hundreds of miles of bicycle trails, according to the TOD Group. Recreational activities also will include walking, running, kayaking, tubing and fishing.

The community will be seven minutes, or 3.5 miles rom downtown Denver by rail when the Gold Line opens in 2016. In addition to I-76, it is closed to I-70?and I-25.

?We?re confident that the Clear Creek Transit Village will be a great fit for new residents and the existing neighborhoods in the area,? Renne said. ?We met repeatedly with neighbors and listened to their input, which is reflected in the plan.? The vast majority of them became strong supporters of the approved plan.?

A 2011 survey by Oedipus Inc. of 392 residents and businesses within a one-and-half-mile radius of the project found that 93 percent supported its approval. Earlier in the year, 435 residents and businesses expressed formal support to Adams County, although a grassroots group called Concerned Citizens for Compatible Development opposed it.

The plan was also endorsed by organizations including Regis University, Adams County Economic Development, the Metro North Chamber of Commerce, the Goat Hill Neighborhood organization, and many businesses along Federal Boulevard.

New buildings on the site are expected to have a construction value of between $160 million to $170 million by 2020, according to an analysis completed for Adams County.

The analysis, by Economic Strategies LLC of Parker, also estimated 1,970 to 2,812 people eventually would live in the community.

?The Clear Creek Transit is an excellent example of current TOD planning and design that will benefit Adams County, improve property values in an underperforming area, and provide a nexus of smart planned growth for the region as part of the RTD Gold Line,? according to the analysis.

The developer said it will ?borrow tenets from successful mixed-use developments such as the Central Platte Valley in Denver, Belmar in Lakewood, Stapleton and the Villagio at Inverness in the Inverness Business Park, south of the Denver Tech Center along the southeast corridor.
