US envoy in Egypt holds talks with rival sides

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Interior Ministry warned supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on Saturday for a second time to abandon their protest camps as a senior U.S. diplomat met with officials on both sides of the country's political divide.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns extended his visit to Cairo by one day so he could meet military leader Gen. Abdel-Fatah el-Sissi and the country's prime minister on Sunday, an Egyptian Foreign Ministry official said. A member of the pro-Morsi delegation that met Saturday with Burns said the four delegates also would meet again with the U.S. diplomat on Sunday for more talks.

At the core of talks is the political future of the Muslim Brotherhood and its Islamist allies following the July 3 coup that ousted Morsi, the country's first freely elected president. The military coup, which followed several days of mass protests by millions of Egyptians demanding his ouster, also led to the dissolution of the Islamist-dominated parliament and the suspension of an Islamist-drafted constitution.

The Brotherhood says it is looking for concessions before beginning talks with their rivals. Such measures could include releasing detained Brotherhood leaders, unfreezing the group's assets, lifting a ban on its television stations and reigning in the use of force against its protesters.

Tarek el-Malt, who met with Burns and is a member of the Brotherhood-allied Wasat Party, said the delegation insisted that any initiatives for a way out of the crisis must center on the 2012 constitution being restored.

"Morsi would return to power in all cases," he told The Associated Press. "Whether he spends his full term in office or delegates his power to a national Cabinet is up for discussion."

However, Burns and others have signaled that the West has moved on from Morsi's presidency. Washington and others are foremost seeking stability in the Arab world's most populous nation, and have called for the Brotherhood's participation in the transition as a way to achieve national reconciliation.

The trip by Burns, his second to Cairo since the coup, comes amid heighted fears of more bloodshed after more than 80 Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police a week ago. More than 280 people have been killed nationwide in political violence since Morsi's removal.

America's No. 2 diplomat also held talks Saturday with interim Egyptian President Adly Mansour and Vice President Mohamed ElBaradei, as did the European Union's special envoy, Bernardino Leon.

Nevine Malak, who attended the same meeting with Burns as el-Malt as part of a delegation representing those against the coup, said the session was mainly for "listening." She said the group, which includes two members of the Brotherhood's political wing, would meet Burns again on Sunday.

"Any solution or any initiative must include the return of the (suspended) constitution," she told the AP. "We don't ignore the fact that there were masses that took to the streets, but we don't ignore either that what happened was a coup against legitimacy."

Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy also met Burns and said Egyptian officials have made clear to their Western counterparts "there is no moving back." Fahmy also said the transitional roadmap adopted by the country's military-backed interim leaders is open to the Brotherhood for participation.

"There have been contacts between different figures, be they in government directly or indirectly, and those among the Brotherhood's leaders," Fahmy told journalists. He declined to describe those discussions as "negotiations."

Fahmy, who served as Cairo's ambassador to Washington under autocrat Hosni Mubarak, also said that key to the U.S. is "their interests in the region."

"I think they do that by assessing who's in power, who's not in power ... and how to deal with that situation given what their interests are," he said.

While Egyptian authorities say the political sphere is open to Morsi's allies, they are simultaneously outlining plans to break up the two main sit-ins where thousands of protesters still rally daily for Morsi's return to power. Authorities plan to set up a cordon around the sites while offering "safe passage" to those willing to leave.

In televised remarks Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif urged Morsi's supporters to end their protests, saying it would help the Brotherhood's return to Egypt's political process. He repeated the offer from the ministry, which is in charge of police, to give a safe exit to those who abandon the sit-ins.

Meanwhile, Al-Qaida's leader Ayman al-Zawahri condemned Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood in a message for having "tried its best to satisfy America and the secularists." He said that democracy is allowed only for those who agree to "be a slave for the West's ideology, action, policy and economy." The message's authenticity could not be independently confirmed but was posted on a militant website late Friday commonly used by al-Qaida.

Facebook for Android update to offer Cover Feed for your lockscreen, even if you don't have Home

Facebook adds Cover Feed to Android app

Facebook Home almost seems like a distant memory at this point, but the company is cooking up new ways to bring some of Home's features to Android users who don't necessary want the full launcher experience on their phone, in addition to offering Home support on more devices. Today the main social networking app is getting an update in the Play Store to include Cover Feed, which was one of the most visible parts of the Home launcher. If you're so inclined, you can now use the feature as your lock screen without worrying about getting the full package on your device -- provided your particular gadget at least is capable of supporting Home. If you're not seeing it on your device yet, check in a little while -- Facebook tells us that it should start rolling out over the next few hours. However, if you're still curious to play around with the Home experience, Facebook also announced official support for new devices today, such as the Nexus 4 and Samsung Galaxy S 4.

New prime ministers asked to decide what happens if nuclear war destroys London

"Each Pebble group would be an embryo central Government, headed by a senior minister.

"If London were destroyed, the senior surviving minister would take over the surviving central Government, and arrangements have been made for him to exercise control of the Polaris force at sea if neither you nor one of the nuclear deputies survived."

The new prime minister would also have been briefed about the "unlikely" event of a ?bolt from the blue? nuclear strike that killed all forms of government.

Polaris submarine commanders were told if there was a nuclear attack on Britain or if they received no contact from naval headquarters for four hours, they should open a sealed envelope containing a letter from the Commander-in-Chief Fleet.

This set out the conditions under which a second envelope containing specific instructions from the prime minister about the use of the vessels? nuclear weapons should be opened.

The briefing notes disclose that the new premier would have been told: "Mrs Thatcher's orders cease to be operative, and I should like to discuss this matter with you, with a view to obtaining your decision on what the last resort orders should be.?

Facebook announces Embedded Posts, copies yet another Twitter feature

New Delhi: Facebook says it has started rolling out a much wanted feature - embedded posts. This new Facebook feature will allow users to post Facebook posts on other Web pages.

"Embedded Posts let people add public posts from Facebook to their blog or web site. When embedded, posts can include pictures, videos, hashtags and other content. People can also like and share the post directly from the embed," Facebook software engineers Dave Capra and Ray He said in a post introducing embedded posts on Facebook.

Though not all Facebook posts are embeddable, only those posts whose privacy settings are set to public can be embedded.

Facebook announces Embedded Posts, copies yet another Twitter feature

This new Facebook Embedded Posts feature will allow users to embed Facebook posts on other Web pages.

Facebook Embedded Posts is currently limited to the content posted by a few news publishers and Facebook says broader availability is coming soon.

Embedded Posts is only the latest in the long list of Twitter features that Facebook has aped. The last major feature that Facebook copied from Twitter was the hashtag.

While Twitter users have been on their own using the # symbol as a prefix to a word or phrase to group related tweets for quite some time, Twitter began hyperlinking hashtags from July 2009 and Facebook began rolling it in June 2013.

That blue and white icon with a check mark is a much desired badge on Twitter. So what if even a fake account can flaunt one? It was only last month that Facebook announced its own blue check mark for "authentic accounts of celebrities and other high-profile people and businesses on Facebook." Twitter's verified account feature dates back to 2009. Though unlike Twitter, Facebook will verify authentic identities on its own and users cannot request to have a profile or Page verified.

One big difference between Facebook and Twitter was that Facebook required consent from both users for one to get updates from the other, while on Twitter an one-sided action would suffice. With the 'Subscribe' button, introduced in September 2011 (and renamed to 'Follow' in December 2012) Facebook let its users receive posts from other Facebook users, even from those they are not friends with. Quite like Twitter.

@mentions pre-dates Twitter, but its usage gained popularity with the rise of Twitter. While Twitter added support for @mentions (or @replies or tagging) in May 2008, Facebook's integration came more than a year later in September 2009.

That's not all. Twitter had this feature, where hovering over a username would display an information box with the users' details (Twitter has now changed the action from rollover to click) and this, obviously, found its way into the Facebook user experience.

If you are in the mood for some micro-inspirations, here's one. Twitter no longer asks you to tweet "What are you doing?" (it has switched to "What's happening?" for quite some time now) and when Facebook went for a redesign in August 2008 it added prominence to its status update feature and began asking users, "What are you doing right now?". Note the similarity?

It's not that Twitter didn't seek inspiration elsewhere. It did and continues to do. So does Google+. The problem with this feature aping is that the competing social networks are slowly becoming clones of one another, feature by feature. Soon there might be little to tell them apart from their brand names.

Nerve Damage Found in Nearly Half of Fibromyalgia Patients

Massachusetts researchers who used a small group of subjects to study fibromyalgia found that nearly half the patients with the disorder had nerve problems. These individuals experienced damage to nerve fibers located in their skin and also showed evidence of a second illness.

A research team from Massachusetts General Hospital followed 27 adult fibromyalgia patients and 30 healthy subjects. In addition to signs of nerve damage in the fibromyalgia subjects, they found evidence of a disease known as small-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN) in these patients, according to ScienceDaily.

Fibromyalgia is known as a particularly frustrating disorder for those who have it because not all medical professionals take it seriously. Since it's difficult to treat, many patients need a team of healthcare providers.

Although experts have suggested a number of potential causes, none has been specifically linked to the illness. The National Institute of Muscular and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases reports that the condition strikes as many as 5 million American adults. Around 80 to 90 percent are women.

SFPN is a disorder marked by severe pain attacks that usually originate in the hands or the feet, although some patients experience a more generalized pain over the whole body, Genetics Home Reference reports. Many symptoms are similar to those fibromyalgia patients report. SFPN patients can't feel pain that occurs in a very small area, like that from a pin prick. Some have trouble telling the difference between hot and cold, while for others, extreme temperatures trigger attacks.

SFPN is a form of peripheral neuropathy. It affects the peripheral nervous system, which links the brain and the spinal cord to muscles and cells that detect various sensations. Unlike fibromyalgia, it has a number of known causes that doctors can treat and sometimes cure.

The objective of the Massachusetts research was to explore any possible links between fibromyalgia and SFPN. The subjects completed questionnaires and underwent physical exams and tests to look for SFPN, including neuropathy assessments, skin biopsies to evaluate nerve fibers in the lower legs, and tests of autonomic functions like heart rate. The results showed significant neuropathy in patients with fibromyalgia, but not in the control subjects.

Thirteen fibromyalgia patients had a notable reduction in nerve fiber density, autonomic function test results that were abnormal, or both conditions. This indicates SFPN. While diabetes is a common SFPN cause, none of the patients appeared diabetic. Two had a hepatitis C infection. More than half showed signs of immune system dysfunction.

The researchers have published their findings in the journal PAIN. They concluded that their results provide some of the earliest evidence of a specific mechanism behind at least some cases of fibromyalgia. They look at the results as a step toward finding improved ways to treat the disorder. The next step -- getting independent confirmation of the results from other labs -- is already underway.
