Gay marriage opponents ask Supreme Court to reimpose California ban

By Steve Gorman and Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Opponents of gay marriage filed a long-shot petition on Saturday with the Supreme Court asking the justices to immediately halt same-sex weddings taking place in California since Friday, when an appeals court lifted a 5-year-old ban on gay matrimony.

Marriage ceremonies of gay and lesbian couples went ahead after a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco removed its stay of a trial judge's order declaring the gay marriage ban, known as Proposition 8, unconstitutional.

The stay had been in force while the decision striking down Prop 8, a state constitutional amendment passed by voters in 2008, was appealed to the Supreme Court. Political supporters of the measure were left to appeal the case because state elected officials declined to defend it.

But the justices on Wednesday ruled Prop 8 proponents lacked legal standing to defend the ban, a decision that left the trial judge's ruling intact and paved the way for gay marriage in the state to resume.

The Supreme Court had said its ruling would not go into effect for at least 25 days, the amount of time normally given the losing party, in this case, Prop 8 backers, to seek a rehearing of the matter.

But California Attorney General Kamala Harris publicly urged the appeals court to lift its stay sooner than that, and on Friday the 9th Circuit did so in a surprise move that prompted a flurry of hastily arranged same-sex weddings up and down the state.

Harris herself officiated the very first one, a ceremony in which one of the two couples named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit against Prop 8, Kristin Perry and her fianc?e, Sandy Stier, exchanged vows on a balcony overlooking the grand staircase at San Francisco City Hall.

Dozens more couples lined up on Saturday at City Hall as officials kept the doors open to accommodate gay and lesbian couples eager to tie the knot.

The scene was upbeat but subdued, with many couples casually dressed as they waited to obtain marriage licenses. The calm was punctuated about every 15 minutes by loud clapping when a wedding ended, as family and friends of a newly wedded couple joined in applause with marriage license applicants.

City Administrator Naomi Kelly said at least one couple came from as far away as Texas.

One pair of San Francisco newlyweds, Ken and David Miller, who have been together for 24 years, said they decided to seize the moment on Saturday out of concern that the window for same-sex nuptials could somehow close again.

"We knew how the courts can play games and pull the plug," said Ken Miller, 60. "But the courts are closed over the weekend and the city was open, so we thought we should do it."

In their application asking the Supreme Court to overrule the 9th Circuit and reinstate the gay marriage ban, opponents argued the appeals court had jumped the gun in lifting its stay.

The Arizona-based group Alliance Defending Freedom argued that the 9th Circuit lacked authority to act when it did, and that it violated the terms of its own stay requiring the ruling remain in place "until final disposition by the Supreme Court."

'WEAK ARGUMENT'

But the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which sponsored the federal court challenge to Prop 8, issued a statement insisting the 9th Circuit acted under its own "broad discretion" to issue its stay in the first place.

"Now that the Supreme Court has decided that the injunction against Proposition 8 must stand, it was entirely appropriate for the 9th circuit to dissolve its stay of that injunction," the alliance said in a statement.

Foundation lawyer Ted Boutrous said Friday's move was hardly unprecedented and that appeals courts had acted similarly in previous, lower-profile cases without drawing attention. Prop 8 supporters, he said, "should hang it up and quit trying to stop people from getting married."

Margaret Russell, a constitutional law professor at Santa Clara University School of Law in California, told Reuters the petition by Prop 8 backers had little chance of success.

"The 25 days isn't a final date. It's a period of time, and the 9th Circuit has the right, actually, to act within the 25 days," Russell said. "They lost the case, so I think that's a weak petition and a weak argument."

Daria Roithmayr, a University of Southern California law school professor, said she expected the petition to be dismissed.

With the federal appeals court action on Friday, California became the 10th state, in addition to the District of Columbia, where gay marriage is legal. Laws legalizing same-sex marriage are due to go into effect in the coming weeks in three more states - Delaware, Rhode Island and Minnesota.

About 18,000 gay couples were previously married in California during a five-month window in 2008 after the state Supreme Court swept aside an earlier ban but before Prop 8 was passed in November of that year.

In August 2010, then-U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker declared Prop 8 unconstitutional following a three-week trial that marked the first challenge in federal court to any state law barring same-sex matrimony. It was his injunction against further enforcement of Prop 8 that had remained stayed by the appeals court pending resolution of the case.

The renewed tolling of wedding bells for same-sex couples in California capped a historic week for gay rights nationwide. The Supreme Court on Wednesday also struck down a U.S. law that denied various federal benefits to married gay couples.

ARME Realty.com Now Offering Online Advertising For Real Estate ...

Online advertising for real estate programs now being offered by ARME Realty.com, a Florida real estate media firm.

Nationwide (PRWEB) June 29, 2013

ARME Realty, an online real estate marketing firm located in Clearwater FL, announces their latest release of their online advertising for real estate programs to agents and brokers which will allow them to market their real estate listings via a proprietary content distribution kit created just for brokers. This new online real estate program consists of several different packages allowing clients the ability to begin building their web presence and continue investing in it over time.

Many realtors and brokers have websites that have been created by themselves or a web development company. The issue with many of these websites is that they are almost always very basic in design as well as content.

Internet marketing and web development are skills that are mastered through training, just like any other type of trade. Being able to produce a fully functional website that is going to grow to its full potential is a task that most individuals are capable of completing on their own.

Essentially, what ARME Realty has done is collect information from conversations that have been had over time with agents and brokers that have inquired about web development services and turned that information into what they call a "powerhouse web developer" which in turn will drive more sales to the real estate professional users.

"Feedback provided by realtors from all over the United States was used to develop an iron clad content management system allowing real estate professionals to grow their websites at a maximum pace. The unique and proprietary toolkit allows realtors to distribute their listing advertisement unlike ever before," states Simon Landers, spokesperson.

"The system allows the real estate profession to zero in on the exact type of home buyer or property type for purchase that the broker wants to deal in. People in every county in the country are doing local real estate related searches for virtually all property types and our toolkit will find out who those people are and exactly what property types they are searching for. It then translates this data into leads for our customers," continues Mr. Landers.

88% The Angels' Share

All Critics (83) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (73) | Rotten (10)

The result is a sometimes gritty, occasionally charming Highland hybrid, but the final balance feels slightly off-kilter.

Loach takes us through the mysteries of whisky making, exploring the subtle tastes and scents in ways that will have audiences wishing they had a dram at hand. But a glass also serves more symbolic purposes ...

If you want to look for it, you'll find a layer of metaphor (the distilling process as a symbol of the characters' evolution) and social-realist commentary amid the gentle, life-affirming laughs.

[Ken Loach] and his longtime screenwriter, Paul Laverty, find a good balance between drama and wacky character moments.

A fairy tale with its feet firmly on the ground.

A lark, but it's a serious-minded lark, addressing issues of class and culture, the haves and have-nots.

Ken Loach walks on the lighter side

The title, by the way, refers to the distillation process: the 2% of whisky that evaporates in the barrel is known as "the angel's share." I'm afraid there's more than 2% evaporation going on in Loach's latest.

Much like a stiff drink at the end of a long day, "The Angels' Share" gets the job done, but you're probably not going to remember it in the morning.

Loach's realism lends an easygoing, ramshackle quality to the film that smoothes over any lack of tightness.

Director Ken Loach's latest glimpse of the U.K. underclass is really two rather different movies, either of which I would've enjoyed on their own. But they don't really fit together in any satisfying or even logical way.

Whether Robbie pulls off his caper should be left for the audience to discover. But Loach's great cinematic switcheroo goes off almost without a hitch.

As heartwarming and uplifting as any tale could be that features vicious beatings and grand larceny.

While it has some likable characters, particularly its charismatic lead, it's impossible to shake the feeling that we've seen this movie before.

Lead actor Paul Brannigan, the product of Glasgow's working-class East End, is a natural.

The usual Loachian elements are all in place, but there is a gentle spirit at work here as well, and not just the alcoholic spirits around which the plot revolves.

The Angels' Share is a stellar bit of activist cinema with a light touch.

Teen Tattoos and Piercings: Be Smart About Body Art | Lifestyles of ...

Posted on28 June 2013.

By: Shaina Owens, High School Student

In the U.S. alone, over 40 million people have at least one tattoo and almost a third of them are ages 16 to 25 years. In all honesty, the tattoo you get will be with you for the rest of your life. The flip side to that truth is that there are serious health and social risks involved that need to be considered. Getting informed before getting inked or pierced is important. You need to consider the pros and cons.

The tattoo process consists of these basic steps: the design, placement on the body, the tattoo/piercing artist, choosing a hygienic facility, the social and career implications and your skin?s ability to heal properly. Common mistakes start with the design. Experts recommend that you not tattoo your face or neck, not use the name of your girlfriend or boyfriend, not use symbols that you have no idea what they represent, not use cartoon characters, not use fad style designs, like anchors or barb-wire, not use slogans from commercials or retail products, and not use faces of other people. This list could go on and on, but basically it?s about choosing a design that represents you. Be creative and original, and really put some thought into your artwork before it becomes a permanent part of your body.

Many teens never think about the health risks involved with tattoos and piercings. Some scary diseases have been linked to inking and piercing such as HIV, hepatitis, staph, and allergic skin reactions. Opt for a hygienic facility that uses sterile equipment and new needles. Research and get references. Talk to the owner and/or artist and inspect the business yourself. The artist should wash his/her hands and wear disposable gloves. The body site for your tattoo or piercing should be cleaned with a bacteria-killing solution. If you have doubts, ask if you can watch a person get tatted or pierced. This should give you first-hand insight as to their sterilization procedures. And, despite the place you pick, pain is a part of the process. Follow all after-care instructions to avoid infections.

You would never think an employer would care if you have a tattoo or body piercing, but some do. In fact, some won?t hire you because of your tattoo or piercing. Is it against the law for them to deny you employment? No, it?s not. So be wise with your body art site. It could cost you your job.

There?s also a social stigma associated with tattoos and piercings. While most teens from our generation think tattoos and piercings are cool and an awesome way to express ourselves, there are those that see it as rebellious, disrespectful, irresponsible and gang-related. Don?t be surprised if you get a dirty look because of your body art. It?s something that will either become acceptable and the norm or it will fade away like so many other fads.

Tattoos and piercings have grown in popularity among teens and young adults. It?s a trend that doesn?t seem to be losing its steam. Consider all your choices and educate yourself. You don?t want to make a decision that you?ll regret, or worse, make you ill. Start by being smart before you get any body art.

EU leaders win breakthrough on budget deal

BRUSSELS (AP) ? European Union leaders reached an outline deal Friday on the 27-country bloc's 960 billion euro ($1.3 trillion) seven-year budget, overcoming a British-French dispute to sign off on the agreement.

British Prime Minister David Cameron had held out for the same financial conditions already promised him months ago, overshadowing a summit meant to focus on the continent's youth unemployment problems.

However, in the end, all 27 nations backed the budget deal. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said "it is a quite clear 'yes'," when it came to unanimous backing of the 2014-2020 spending plan.

Beyond the seven-year spending plan, which still needs full parliamentary approval, the EU nations also agreed on the shape of future bank bailouts, injecting a sense of fresh credibility into the efforts of the leaders to control the region's economic problems.

But the budget deal also highlighted deep divisions among European countries over whether to spend or cut their way out of crisis. The UK is seeking reassurances that it won't have to contribute too much at a time of belt-squeezing across the continent.

The multi-annual budget, which includes the first cut to EU spending in its history, determines what the bloc can spend on common infrastructure like railway or road projects, farming subsidies and aid to poor countries. It's separate from national budgets ? and much smaller ? but a source of difficult and passionate debate.

The decision came after some protracted brinkmanship following the British objections to an outline reached early Thursday. Cameron surprised many by insisting that the EU stick to parts of an earlier agreement reached in February.

Due to a provision on agricultural funding, the country could have lost some of its previously negotiated repayment from the budget, costing it about an annual 200 to 300 million euros, a diplomat from a major EU country said.

The issue left London up against Paris, which would have to pay for the bulk of the shortfall otherwise, the diplomat said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't allowed to discuss the closed-door talks publicly.

In the end, Van Rompuy said the British concerns were taken on board, since "actually nothing has changed" on the question of Britain's contribution since the February agreement.

French President Francois Hollande said he signed off on the deal and praised the European Parliament for winning more wiggle room on the budget.

The summit was initially meant to focus on finding ways to get more young people employed, and calmly taking stock of EU efforts to stabilize the world's biggest economic bloc now that its deep debt troubles have subsided.

Crucially, the EU budget also includes money for the employment measures that the bloc's leaders addressed at the two-day summit which finishes Friday afternoon. No budget agreement would mean no money for those projects.

Unemployment is at a record high of 11 percent for the EU and 12.2 percent for the 17 member countries that use the euro. It is far worse for the young: Latest figures show almost one in four people aged under 25 in the EU are unemployed. In Greece and Spain, that rate has it hit more than 50 percent.

After the late-night meetings, Hollande said that 6 billion euros for youth jobs will be speeded up and spent over 2014-2015 instead of over 7 years.

In addition he said that there will be two to three times that amount in "European credits" for employment schemes.

Germany argues that governments should focus on reforms instead of new funding, to get growth going again and create more jobs.

Thursday's deal on the budget came hours after EU finance ministers reached a landmark deal determining that banks' shareholders, creditors and holders of large deposits will have to bear the brunt of future bank failures, so that taxpayers don't have to.

The joint rules on how to restructure or wind down banks are a key step toward establishing a so-called banking union for Europe, aimed at restoring stability after a tumultuous few years that have dragged down the global economy.

To Hell and back: Inside Foley's famous fall 15 years later

Each and every day, Mick Foley hears the same question from wrestling fans around the globe: ?Did it hurt going through that table?? Fifteen years since the fateful night of June 28, 1998, The Hardcore Legend is still feeling the repercussions of being flung from the top of the Hell in a Cell by The Undertaker and plunging to the concrete below. For many spectators ? both fans and those in the locker room ? the visual of Mankind?s body crashing through the ringside announce table represents the height of ring brutality and still resonates today.

On the anniversary of a moment that defined an era, WWEClassics.com sat down with Foley, announcer Jim Ross, former referee Tim White and more of the men who experienced WWE?s most punishing match in person. What does the match mean to Mick 15 years later? What did the guys in the locker room think? And did it really hurt going through that table?

For the first time ever on WWE.com, watch the famous Hell in a Cell Match in its entirety

View never-before-seen photos of the in-ring action and the aftermath backstage

WWECLASSICS.COM: When you look at that match now, do you think the moment of you going off the top of the cell defines your career? And if so, do you regret or embrace that?

MICK FOLEY: I feel kind of like Adam West in his views towards being Batman. For so many years, he fought it. Just like for so many years it really felt like I had other matches that were worth talking about that seldom got mentioned. You either go on being frustrated about it or you learn to embrace it. I had a breakthrough moment at the?WWE Hall of Fame [Induction Ceremony this year], when I heard the story being told from Terry Funk?s point of view. I came to see that match in a whole new light and I came to better appreciate how much it affected people.

WWECLASSICS.COM: In your book, ?Have a Nice Day,? you mention that your opponent was originally supposed to be ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin, not The Undertaker. How do you think the match would have been different against Austin? Would the famous fall have ever happened?

FOLEY: Who knows? It may have been a completely different match. At a certain point, [WWE officials] were almost making it a ?Thunderdome?-type match like in ?Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,? where you would have different objects that would be attached to the cell. There was an idea for some sort of bungee that would allow us to propel ourselves to the top of the cell to allow us to recover the objects.

WWECLASSICS.COM: Once you knew you were wrestling The Undertaker, you knew you wanted to start the match on top of the cell?

FOLEY: That was Terry Funk?s brainchild. After Terry and I watched the?first Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, I looked at Terry and said, ?What am I going to do?? I was never really a great cage match wrestler. I didn?t have the athleticism to do a lot of the climbing. I certainly didn?t have any of Shawn Michaels? athleticism and I did not think I could live up to the standards that they had set. Terry thought about it for a while and said, ?It?s going to be tough, but maybe you ought to start the match on top of the cell.? He jokingly mentioned ?Hey, maybe you get thrown off and climb back up on top of the cell.? As he was laughing, I said, ?I think I can do that.? I wasn?t serious, but at that point I had that seed in my mind and I had a vision of what I wanted to accomplish.

WWECLASSICS.COM: Did that vision include being tossed off by your opponent?

FOLEY: In my original plan, I wanted to drop an elbow off the top of that cage. But that?s not what worked out.

WWECLASSICS.COM: The mindset of Mick Foley seems to be that you were always trying to top yourself. When you took that fall, did you inadvertently create a moment that was impossible to top?

FOLEY: I think that I created a moment that was impossible to top and I think I created a moment that shouldn?t be topped. [Mr. McMahon] talked about ?placing a governor on me? and then explained to me that a governor is a device that does not allow a car to exceed a certain speed.? That governor needed to be placed not only on me, but on other Superstars that wanted to top me. So many of the Superstars want to give people moments that they?ll never forget, but we don?t want to give them moments that could end Superstars? careers. Mine easily could have ended that night in Pittsburgh.

Who Would You Cast In a Live-Action Jetsons Movie?

Who Would You Cast In a Live-Action Jetsons Movie?

Kanye West is making the rounds again claiming that he's the creative director for a live-action Jetsons movie that's currently (sort-of, kind-of, not really) in development. Beyond the fact that "creative director" isn't actually the title for a job on any movie ? but something you'd find at an advertising agency ? consider this retrofuture blogger skeptical that a Jetsons movie will ever see the light of day.

But that being said, it's still fun to imagine who might be cast in a movie about the world's most famous family from the future.

Over at Entertainment Weekly they've taken a couple guesses at who might be good for each role ? along with a strange, fictionalized response from Kanye West. But I have two issues with the EW list: 1) They SKIPPED JANE! and 2) You can't cast a human to play Rosey. It's unnatural. Rosey is a robot and will be played by a robot. End of discussion.

However, a lot of things feel right about the EW list. I think their choice of Ty Burrell (Phil Dunphy on ABC's "Modern Family") is perfect for George. And Bob Hoskins as Mr. Spacely is a great pick. But while Elle Fanning is a fine actress, I'm not sure she's right for the role of Judy.

So who do you think should be cast in each of these flesh-and-blood retro-futuristic roles? Let me just stress again that I don't think this movie is actually going to get off the ground anytime soon. But we can dream!

4 workers hurt in Texas A&M construction accident

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) ? Four workers were hurt, three critically, after a barn frame collapsed Saturday at an $80 million Texas A&M University equestrian complex that's under construction.

The collapse happened on university property about a mile from the main campus, Texas A&M spokesman Lane Stephenson said.

College Station and Bryan fire departments, campus police and Texas A&M emergency medical personnel all responded to the accident, which happened shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday.

The accident involved an approximately 300-foot barn, according to the College Station Fire Department. Twisted metal beams could be seen at the site, where ground was broken last fall.

The injured workers were transported to hospitals. Their names and further details on their conditions were not immediately released. Nobody else was hurt.

For a time, emergency responders had to halt the search for the four because of concerns about another collapse.

"After that time search and rescue efforts were suspended until the remainder of the structure that was still standing could be stabilized," according to a statement from the College Station Fire Department. "After the structure was secured a secondary search of the area was conducted to ensure that all patients had been located."

Texas A&M police officials were trying to determine what caused the collapse. University police identified the contractor as Gamma Construction Company, with offices in Houston and San Antonio.

A Gamma Construction representative did not immediately return a phone call to The Associated Press for comment Saturday.

Gamma Construction, on its website, described the A&M work as one of its 2013 projects.

The website said the equestrian complex "will enhance Texas A&M University's equine program and will consolidate not only academic programs, but clubs and associations to one premier location in order to teach, train, conduct research, exhibit and showcase events."

Conditions at the time of the collapse were cloudy with temperatures in the mid-80s and winds gusting just above 10 mph, the National Weather Service said.

The first phase of the equestrian center was set for completion in 2014. The facility will include locker rooms, offices, a concessions building, a 50-stall barn, plus practice arenas and two covered competition arenas, according to the university.

Wing walker, pilot die in crash at Ohio air show

CINCINNATI (AP) ? A plane carrying a wing walker crashed Saturday at an air show and exploded into flames, killing the pilot and stunt walker instantly, authorities said.

The crash happened at around 12:45 p.m. at the Vectren Air Show at Dayton International Airport. No spectators were hurt.

A video posted on WHIO-TV shows the plane turn upside-down as the performer sits on top of the wing. The plane then tilts and crashes to the ground, exploding into flames as spectators screamed.

Ian Hoyt, 20, an aviation photographer and licensed pilot from Findlay, was at the show with his girlfriend. He told The Associated Press he was taking photos as the plane passed by and had just raised his camera to take another shot.

"Then I realized they were too low and too slow. And before I knew it, they hit the ground," he said.

He couldn't tell exactly what happened, but it appeared that the plane stalled and didn't have enough air speed, he said.

"I'm still shaking," Hoyt said. He said he had been excited to see the show because he'd never seen the scheduled performer ? wing walker Jane Wicker ? in action.

The names of those killed weren't immediately released, but a schedule on the event's website and the announcer at the show said Wicker was performing.

Airport spokeswoman Linda Hughes and Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Anne Ralston confirmed the deaths to the AP.

The show was canceled for the rest of the day, but organizers said events would resume Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating the crash.

Another spectator, Shawn Warwick of New Knoxville, told the Dayton Daily News that he was watching the flight through binoculars.

"I noticed it was upside-down really close to the ground. She was sitting on the bottom of the plane," he said. "I saw it just go right into the ground and explode."

Wicker's website says she responded to a classified ad from the Flying Circus Airshow in Bealeton, Va., in 1990, for a wing-walking position, thinking it would be fun. Her full-time job was as a budget analyst for the Federal Aviation Administration, according to her website.

She told WDTN-TV in an interview this week that her signature move was hanging underneath the plane's wing by her feet and sitting on the bottom of the airplane while it's upside-down.

"I'm never nervous or scared because I know if I do everything as I usually do, everything's going to be just fine," she told the station.

Wicker wrote on her website that she had never had any close calls.

"What you see us do out there is after an enormous amount of practice and fine tuning, not to mention the airplane goes through microscopic care. It is a managed risk and that is what keeps us alive," she wrote.

In 2007, veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed at the Dayton show when his biplane slammed into the runway while performing loop-to-loops and caught fire.

Organizers were presenting a trimmed-down show and expected smaller crowds at Dayton after the Air Force Thunderbirds and other military participants pulled out this year because of federal budget cuts.

The air show, one of the country's oldest, usually draws around 70,000 people and has a $3.2 million impact on the local economy. Without military aircraft and support, the show expected attendance to be off 30 percent or more.

Chicago's top line too much for Boston to handle

CHICAGO (AP) ? Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews are not exactly imposing, their playoff beards about the only thing keeping them from being mistaken for somebody's little brothers.

Try telling that to the Boston Bruins and their bruising tandem of Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg.

Chicago's top line made the Bruins pay again Saturday night, with Kane scoring two more goals in a 3-1 victory that puts the Blackhawks one victory away from its second Stanley Cup title in four years. Since Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville tinkered with his top line before Game 4 to reunite his two best players, Kane and Toews have combined for four goals and seven points.

And, most important, two wins.

"I think (Kane) gets excited playing with (Bryan) Bickell and Toews," Quenneville said. "They get excited about that togetherness, and they seem to read off each other. Everybody brings a little bit something different to the party, and they scored two huge goals for us tonight."

Whether the star-studded line stays intact for Monday night's potential clincher in Boston isn't certain, however. Toews didn't play at all in the third period, though he stayed on the bench and was badgering Quenneville to give him a shift.

"We're hopeful he'll be ready next game," Quenneville said. "He wanted to play. We'll see."

Kane and Toews are Chicago's version of peanut butter and jelly, a perfect combination that just isn't the same by itself. Drafted a year apart ? Toews was the third pick overall in 2006, Kane was first in 2007 ? they arrived together for the 2007-08 season and have been the cornerstones of Chicago's rejuvenation. They've already won one Stanley Cup, and began this year helping the Blackhawks set an NHL record for season-opening points.

"We're different style players, but I think we complement each other very well," Kane said of Toews. "We've played together for six years now. I know we didn't play together very much this year, but throughout times in the past you can look back at those times that we've had success."

But with the Blackhawks facing Boston, Quenneville decided to split up his young stars.

At 6-foot-9 and 255 pounds, Chara looks like a mountain on the ice ? and he's about as impassable. Seidenberg is equally formidable, and Quenneville didn't want them ganging up on his phenoms at the same time and neutralizing them.

But the experiment failed. Pretty miserably.

With no goals from either Kane or Toews in the first three games, the Blackhawks found themselves trailing the Bruins 2-1. Needing a spark, Quenneville put Kane and Toews back together again for Game 4.

"I think we bring three different styles of play," said Bickell, who has three points in the last two games.

Such a simple switch, yet it's turned the series around.

"Playing with Johnny and Bicks, they create a lot of space, and I've been taking advantage of the space they do make," Kane said. "I think everyone wants to be that guy in big-time games, and I've been lucky enough in a couple to step up."

Toews scored his first goal in almost a month ? May 25, to be exact ? in Game 4, while Kane got his first goal of the series. It was more of the same Saturday, with Kane's quick reflexes putting Boston on the ropes.

With 2:33 left in the first period, Johnny Oduya's slapshot hit Seidenberg's stick and shattered the blade. The puck trickled behind Boston goalie Tuukka Rask and Kane scooped it up and tucked it into the net to give Chicago a 1-0 lead.

He doubled the score just over five minutes into the second period, getting help from both Toews and Bickell.

Bickell picked up a pass from Toews and took a shot from the left side, along the goal line. He got his own rebound and circled around the net, looking like a shark searching for prey. He finally spotted an opening, but the puck caromed off the side of the net.

Kane pounced on the rebound, and Rask never had a chance.

"It's an exciting time," Kane said, "especially when you're scoring in games like this."

U.S. seeks Snowden's extradition, urges Hong Kong to act quickly

By Steve Holland and Phil Stewart

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States said on Saturday it wants Hong Kong to extradite Edward Snowden and urged it to act quickly, paving the way for what could be a lengthy legal battle to prosecute the former National Security Agency contractor on espionage charges.

Legal sources say Snowden, who is believed to be hiding in Hong Kong, has sought legal representation from human rights lawyers since leaking details about secret U.S. surveillance activities to news media.

"If Hong Kong doesn't act soon, it will complicate our bilateral relations and raise questions about Hong Kong's commitment to the rule of law," a senior Obama administration official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon told CBS News the United States had a "good case" to bring Snowden back to America to face trial and expected Hong Kong to comply with its extradition treaty.

"We have gone to the Hong Kong authorities seeking extradition of Snowden back to the United States," Donilon said.

He added that U.S. law enforcement officials were in a "conversation" with Hong Kong authorities about the issue.

A senior U.S. law enforcement source said extradition "can, of course, be a lengthy legal process" but expressed optimism that Snowden would be sent back to the United States.

The South China Morning Post reported that Snowden was not detained or in police protection - as reported elsewhere - and instead he was in a "safe place" somewhere in Hong Kong.

The paper also quoted Snowden offering new details about America's spy activities, including accusations of U.S. hacking of Chinese mobile phone companies and targeting China's top Tsinghua University.

"The NSA does all kinds of things like hack Chinese cellphone companies to steal all of your SMS (texting) data," Snowden was quoted by the newspaper as saying in a June 12 interview.

Documents previously leaked by Snowden revealed that the NSA has access to vast amounts of internet data such as emails, chat rooms and video from large companies, including Facebook and Google, under a government program known as Prism.

They also showed that the government had worked through the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to gather so-called metadata - such as the time, duration and telephone numbers called - on all calls carried by service providers such as Verizon.

On Friday, the Guardian newspaper, citing documents shared by Snowden, said Britain's spy agency GCHQ had tapped fiber-optic cables that carry international phone and internet traffic and is sharing vast quantities of personal information with the NSA.

ESPIONAGE CHARGES

The United States charged Snowden with theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence to an unauthorized person, according to the June 14 criminal complaint made public on Friday.

The latter two offenses fall under the U.S. Espionage Act and carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison.

Scores of Americans have been sent back home from Hong Kong to face trial under the extradition treaty. But the process can take years, lawyers say, and Snowden's case could be particularly complex.

America's use of the Espionage Act against Snowden has fueled debate among legal experts about whether that could complicate his extradition, since the treaty includes an exception for political offenses and Hong Kong courts may choose to shield him from prosecution.

Snowden says he leaked the details of the classified U.S. surveillance to expose abusive and illegal programs that trampled on citizens' privacy rights.

President Barack Obama and his intelligence chiefs have vigorously defended the programs, saying they are regulated by law and that Congress was notified. They say the programs have been used to thwart militant plots and do not target Americans' personal lives.

Stephen Vladeck, a professor at American University's Washington College of Law who studies national security issues, said there is no clear definition of what constitutes a political offense under the treaty.

"My intuition says it'll be easier for Snowden to argue espionage is a political offense than (the U.S. charge of) theft of government property," Vladeck said.

Should he return to the United States, Snowden would face trial in a federal court in Virginia that has a long track record of hearing cases related to national security and also to cyber crime.

In the past 20 years, the U.S. government has racked up remarkable success rates in winning convictions or guilty pleas from people brought before the federal court in Virginia who were accused of espionage or terrorism. Because of its speed, the court is considered a "rocket docket.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' film director chosen

Some are seeing the choice of 'Nowhere Boy' director Sam Taylor-Johnson as a sign that the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' film adaptation will skew slightly high-brow.

One of the biggest questions for the "Fifty Shades of Grey" film ? who would take the helm for the film adaptation and find some way to translate the book's explicit scenes for the cinema ? has been answered. Sam Taylor-Johnson of "Nowhere Boy" has been announced as the project's director.

?"I'm so excited to be charged with the evolution of?Fifty Shades of Grey?from page to screen," Taylor-Johnson said in a statement?Wednesday. "For the legions of fans, I want to say that I will honor the power of Erika's book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin, too."?

Author E.L. James said via Twitter that she was very happy with the choice.??I'm delighted & thrilled to let you guys know that Sam Taylor-Johnson has agreed to direct the film of 'Fifty Shades of Grey,? James tweeted.

It had previously been announced that writer Kelly Marcel will be adapting the book for the screen.

In filmmaking, Taylor Johnson is primarily known for her 2009 film ?Nowhere Boy,? a biopic about John Lennon as a teenager. She has also directed short films such as 2011?s ?James Bond Supports International Women?s Day.?

The Guardian called the director an ?unexpected choice? in its headline about the selection, while Los Angeles Times writer Steven Zeitchick speculated that the choice of Taylor-Johnson meant that the ?Fifty Shades? studio is trying to go slightly high-brow with the film adaptation.

?She is, however, known for being an acclaimed visual artist ? she's won Britain's acclaimed Turner Prize ? which plays into the belief that Focus and, in particular, James, want this to be a tonier version?[of the book],? he wrote.

How to install Android apps from the Google Play website

Google Play

Installing Android apps to your phone or tablet from any computer with a web browser

Google is one of the biggest web service companies around. Their cloud-based apps and services can do some pretty wild and wonderful things, and we're about to look at one of them -- installing apps to your Android device remotely through the Google Play website.

All the complicated issues, like making sure apps are compatible and available for you, or keeping track of which device(s) you're currently using are done by Google behind-the-scenes, leaving us with just a few clicks needed to make some serious magic happen. All you need is an Android device registered with Google Play, and a computer with a modern web browser.

There's a complete video walkthrough of the process after the break, but we'll spend a few minutes and talk about it as well. This is the way I install almost all my apps, because I only have to find them once and can install them to any device I may have in service. It goes a little something like this.

Chinese Go On UK Luxury Spending Spree

A Chinese conglomerate is to spend ?1bn to buy British yacht maker Sunseeker and develop an upmarket London hotel on the major Nine Elms regeneration site.

Dalian Wanda Group is taking a 91.8% stake in Sunseeker for ?320m.

The yacht builder, which employs 2,300 staff in Dorset, has been told its base in Poole and the workforce will be retained.

Management is to purchase the remaining shares.

More than ?700m is to be spent, the firm said, on a 160-room luxury hotel and apartment complex overlooking the River Thames at Vauxhall.

The Nine Elms development site, which stretches to Battersea along the south bank of the Thames, will also house the US embassy and other office and residential developments and be served by the extension to the Northern Line tube, due to open in three years' time.

iOS 7 and a second coat of paint

iOS 7 and the need for a second coat of paint

Parts of iOS 7 shown off by Apple during the WWDC Keynote and on Apple.com look like we're still seeing the design briefs or wireframes rather than the final art. Palettes have been chosen, elements have been put in place, but so far it looks like iOS 7 hasn't been given the level of polish we've come to expect from Apple, even during the beta stage. From icons to interface elements to typography, we seem to be getting a very rare glimpse at a very early work-in-progress, and something that still needs of a second coat of design paint.

Given the realities of iOS 7's development, that makes a certain amount of sense. Whether or not Tim Cook's change in leadership led to a rapid change in direction, whether or not Jony Ive's desire to shake things up led to the marketing design department taking the lead, rather than human interactive department, whether or not iOS 7 is really more of a late stage alpha than an early stage beta, it's absolutely the most audacious interface transformation we've ever seen from Apple, and that type of evolution isn't easy, and certainly not at this pace.

Yet beyond the level of finish, there are certain things that seem... off. For all the amazing new work Apple has put into removing textures, amping up the skeumorphism, and opening up the design potential, and almost entirely objectifying and gamifying the new interface model, certain fundamental elements of design seem missing, and that's generating a lot of feedback from professionals and enthusiasts alike.

Apple mentioned clarity, deference, and depth as the key tenenets of the iOS 7 interface. Deference and depth seem deftly handled. Clarity, however, still seems to be a challenge.

Take contrast, for example. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to hold something away at a distance and still be able to make out all the important elements. Light vs dark, or vice-versa, is the easiest way to ensure that, but so are textured vs. untextured, focused vs. unfocused, and more. iOS traditionally has done that very well. iOS 7, however, includes a lot of light, flat elements on equally light or flat saturated backgrounds, greatly reducing contrast and usability.

Proportion is another problem area. The grid that's being used doesn't have enough gravity. It should be incredibly difficult for objects to reach towards edges, and almost impossible as a whole. The Safari icon, however, gets its entire circumfrance uncomfortably close to the border. There's a reason why the Apple logo doesn't go from sleeve to sleeve on company t-shits, or from edge to edge on the top of a Mac Mini.

Just like serif typefaces that need to be visually, not mechanically, aligned to grids, iOS 7 icons need to be visually weighted in their space. (Neven Mrgan explains this brilliantly on his Tumblr.)

Consistency is also an issue. Gradients currently go in different directions, which can confuse the eye and draw attention towards them, rather than the icons, glyphs, and content upon them. (Louie Mantia shared some ideas on normalizing the palette, gradient direction, and icon waiting on Dribbble.)

The typeface, Helvetica Neue Ultrathin, works for small amounts of text set very, very large, but becomes far less legible when used for general interface text. Especially now when un-styled text is being used in lieu of buttons. Perhaps, as Sebastiaan de With has suggested, it's time for a custom typeface optimized for the digital era. If not that, then at least enough weight at each size to be legible at a glance and at a distance.

All of this hampers clarity. Just look at the lock screen, with arrows up and down, Control Center and Camera to drag up, swipe to unlock in text, and only one horizontal direction to go. It's the embodiment of the clash between new and old. Of something unfinished and not yet clear. (And yes, I'll pile on the new signal status indicators as well.)

Apple is almost certainly aware of the issues, of course, of the many of the articles, shots, tweets. Hopefully none of this is news to them; it's the stuff they're already discussing internally and working hard on even as we kvetch and complain.

The architecture -- the springs and struts and planes and movements -- all seem solid. If those were wrong or broken, it would be cause for far greater concern. If Apple hadn't refrained from showing off several iOS apps, not to mention the entire iPad version of iOS, if Apple had given the indication iOS 7 was locked and loaded, it would be cause for far greater concern.

As it is, what we've seen of iOS 7 so far feels more like a sign of just how hard everyone at Apple is working and how fast they're racing towards their fall finish line.

Visual design is where Apple lives, however. They've always had among best and the brightest visual designers on the planet (say what you want about leather or felt, they were rendered beautifully). Hopefully those designers are already hard at work tweaking the palettes, adjusting the grids, evening out the gradients and glyphs, and making the typography shine.

Hopefully they're already hard at work on the polish they do so well, and are already nailing iOS 7's second coat of paint.

New York police sued over surveillance of Muslims

By Chris Francescani

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the New York Police Department over its surveillance of Muslim communities, accusing the police of trampling on religious freedoms and constitutional guarantees of equality.

The surveillance by the NYPD's intelligence division has extended beyond New York City's five boroughs into neighboring New Jersey and other nearby states. The police department says that surveillance of Muslims is legal under an earlier federal court order.

The lawsuit is the latest skirmish in an ongoing battle between the NYPD and civil liberties advocates over the department's aggressive policing tactics - including its stop-and-frisk practices, which are the subject of a separate federal lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, in Brooklyn, seeks to put an end to the NYPD's surveillance of Muslims, the destruction of all records on individuals created as a result of the program and the appointment of an independent monitor to oversee the department.

"When a police department turns law-abiding people into suspects because they go to a mosque and not a church or a synagogue, it violates our Constitution's guarantees of equality and religious freedom," said Hina Shamsi, director of the American Civil Liberties Union National Security Project. She called the NYPD monitoring "suspicionless surveillance" and "religious profiling."

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Muslim New Yorkers, including Asad Dandia, 20, a college student from Brooklyn who helped found a local Muslim charitable group that he said was infiltrated by an NYPD informant.

NYPD chief spokesman Paul Browne said on Tuesday all the department's counter-terror tactics were lawful, and would continue.

"Critics who suggest that it is unlawful for the police department to search online, visit public places, or map neighborhoods either haven't read the guidelines or are intentionally obfuscating their meaning," Browne said. "Those criticisms ... will not deter the NYPD protecting the public from those intent on killing more New Yorkers."

Police officials and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg have fiercely defended the department's surveillance program, and polls have shown that New Yorkers overwhelmingly believe the NYPD has been effective in combating terrorism.

The NYPD has beefed up its intelligence-gathering operations since two hijacked planes were crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Those hijackers claimed Islamic principles, though many Muslim leaders condemned the attack, which stands as the deadliest attack on U.S. soil.

POLICE DEFEND PRACTICE

Last year, the NYPD acknowledged that it's Demographics Unit - created in the wake of the September 11 attacks - engages in monitoring of Muslim communities in New York City, as well as the surrounding region, including mosques in Newark, New Jersey. and among Muslim student associations at colleges in Connecticut and Pennsylvania.

The police department has said its surveillance is legal under a federal court order known as the Handschu agreement, which is based on a 1971 case brought against the department by an activist over NYPD surveillance of Vietnam War-era protesters.

The guidelines, formalized in 1985, sharply restricted undercover operations in which police monitored political or religious groups and required that police have "specific information" that a person or group is "engaged in, about to engage in, or has threatened to engage in conduct which constitutes a crime."

In 2002, the NYPD argued in a federal court affidavit that the guidelines were too restrictive in the post-9/11 era and should be loosened. In an affidavit, the department's NYPD's deputy commissioner for intelligence, David Cohen, said it was critical that the police be able "to conduct investigations into political activity and intelligence-related issues."

U.S. District Judge Charles Haight Jr. agreed, and the restrictions were loosened.

A series of news reports in 2011 and 2012 detailing the NYPD's monitoring of Muslim mosques, bookstores and restaurants throughout New York City and surrounding areas revived the debate.

Lenovo unveils 15-inch ThinkPad S531 Ultrabook

Lenovo unveils 15inch ThinkPad S531 Ultrabook, sticks to Ivy Bridge

As quick as Lenovo has been to hop on the Ultrabook bandwagon, it hasn't been so eager to launch big-screened models. Its new ThinkPad S531 explores that territory at last: the Windows 8 PC mates a slim profile with both a 15.6-inch, lay-flat LCD and a large keyboard. The experience will otherwise be familiar to those who've seen the S431, as it shares the same basic design language, the OneLink dock connector and a nine-hour battery. Unfortunately, the similarity also extends to the Ivy Bridge-era Intel processor -- there's no Haswell inside, at least for now. Still, the £575 ($900) UK price is within reach of many buyers, and there's a 1080p display option coming in July. Lenovo hasn't said if or when the S531 will reach the US, although we hope it gets a processor upgrade if and when it crosses the Atlantic.

(AP) ? This isn't the kind of record Tiger Woods had in mind at the U.S. Open.

Woods went out-of-bounds on his second tee shot of the final round at Merion and closed with a 4-over 74. That gave him his worst 72-hole score as a pro in the U.S. Open, and it tied for his high score in any major.

"I did a lot of things right," Woods said. "Unfortunately, I did a few things wrong, as well."

Woods finished at 13-over 293.

His previous high score in a U.S. Open was 290 at The Olympic Club in 1998 and Shinnecock Hills in 2004. Woods shot 294 at Oakland Hills in 1996 as an amateur.

Just two days ago, Woods was four shots out of the lead and very much in the hunt to end his five-year drought in the majors. Then, he went 76-74 for his worst weekend in a major championship. Just over two weeks ago, the world's No. 1 player had won three of his last four events on the PGA Tour and was starting to establish his dominance.

But he looked ordinary at Merion.

Starting the final round 10 shots behind, Woods made a birdie putt on the opening hole. Instead of a fist pump, he offered only a mild wave. Whatever hopes he had of at least getting his name on the leaderboard ended quickly. Woods pushed his tee shot to the right on the par-5 second hole, over the trees and out-of-bounds. His next tee shot was close to going out-of-bounds, stopping a few yards away in front of a tree. He wound up with a triple bogey.

It was his only big number of the week, though his 20 bogeys were startling.

"I struggled with the speed all week," Woods said. "These greens are grainy. It's one of the older bent grasses ? creeping bent. I struggled with the speed, especially right around the hole. Putts were breaking a lot more. I gave it a little more break and then it would hang. That's kind of the way it was this week."

The 293 matched his high score at any major, last year at the Masters when he tied for 40th.

Woods did not mention any pain in his left elbow, though he kept that a mystery throughout the week. He was flexing and shaking his left hand on shots out of the rough early in the week, saying only that it was painful. He later revealed that he first hurt it at The Players Championship last month, which he won. But he didn't mention the shot or even which round it happened.

Merion remained a mystery for Woods throughout the week. For the first time since Olympic in 1998 ? the year he was rebuilding his swing ? he failed to break par in any of the four rounds at a U.S. Open.

"It played tricky. The rough was up," Woods said. "They were raking the rough up every morning into the grain, and the pins were really tough."

Woods plays again in two weeks at the AT&T National at Congressional, where he is the defending champion. His next major is the British Open at Muirfield, where in 2002 he was going for the calendar Grand Slam until he got caught in a vicious weather pattern of a cold, sideways rain and shot 81 to fall from contention. The final major of the year is at Oak Hill for the PGA Championship, where 10 years ago Woods never shot better than 72 and wound up at 12-over 292.
